These last two weeks I have continued work on my VAM 30 Independent project. I have continued working on semi-finals, as well as backgrounds and finals. I have had a lot of fun working in gouache! It will be a bit weird to complete this project, I think, especially after spending so much time with it. Here is a bit of what I’ve been working on: I have really enjoyed this project, and expanding my skills. It has helped me improve my sense of scale, perspective abilities, and thumbnailing efficiency. I have also had a lot of fun creating background images, something I didn’t really do before this project. I have had a bit of trouble with overall time management, but it was a good experience in the end, I believe, so I know to avoid it in the future!
As this will be my last blog of eight, you will be able to see this project complete and on show on June 13th, as a part of W.H. Croxford’s Celebration of Learning. I hope I will be able to showcase my skills and progress to you there! Thank you for sticking around, and as always, thank you for reading!

These past two weeks, I have been working on my VAM 30 independent Project. I have shifted some gears, as the final for each character will now be their poster-like spread, as I feel it will better demonstrate their character and personality than the sheets that were originally planned. I have continued working on character semi-finals, as well as additional setting pieces, in watercolour and gouache. Here is a full set of three completed semi-finals, as well as a preview work-in-progress of one of the gouache paintings. The final piece will be on show on June 13th, during the Celebration of Learning! I have really enjoyed creating the setting pieces, they have been extremely helpful in developing my skills at creating locations and utilizing perspective! I’ve had some frustration while completing the semi-finals, as due to them being inside of a sketchbook and because I use both sides of the pages, pencil markings smudge the drawings on the other side. Fortunately however, these are easily fixable through a bit of elbow grease and erasing!
I am looking forward to my next update, and being able to show you my progress! I hope to have augmented my abilities even more by then! See you next blog, and thank you for reading! These last two weeks, I have continued to work on my VAM 30 Independent Project. I have switched gears back into completing the semi-final and final designs of several characters. I went with doing just black and white for the time being, in favour of testing colour on a different sheet in order to better document them. I have completed some of these in pencil, and others in ink and marker. Here are some of them! It has been good to do something a bit neater, and to spend a bit longer on the drawings after creating many sketches in rapid succession. I feel this has also improved my workflow when it comes to making complete drawings. I’ve had some difficulty choosing which designs to go forward with, as well as with my time management, but this has overall been a very engaging and informative project!
I am looking forward to the next stages of this project, and my next update! I hope to have plenty to share in my next blog post. Thank you for stopping by! These past two weeks, I have been continuing working on my VAM 30 Project. I have been working on more interior and exterior locations, as well as starting to add blank figures into them for scale. I have also done a few final drawings, some in watercolour and others in marker. Here are some of them, beside their original sketches for comparison. I have had a lot of fun experimenting with these larger and more formal pieces! I have never really drawn any complete background locations before, so this project is a very interesting learning experience. I’ve had some difficulty with creating precise and inorganic lines with pens, and with mistakenly layering markers on top of graphite, rendering it unable to be erased, however, I will take these experiments in stride and consider them in future pieces!
I am looking forward to my next update and being able to show my further progress! I hope to have expanded my skills even more. See you next blog, and thank you for stopping by! These past two weeks, I have continued work on my VAM 30 Project. I have continued working on interior settings, and done some exteriors as well! Once I have finished my sketches, I plan to create final drawings of a few key shots, which will be drawn in ink and most likely coloured via marker or watercolours. Alternatively, I will draw them digitally. Here are a few of these locations so far! I feel I have gained a lot of useful experience! When I began, I really did not have much experience with drawing backgrounds and settings, and this project has been very eye-opening regarding techniques and new skills. Trying out different perspectives has been a lot of fun, and a good challenge! I’ve had some difficulty with placing standalone objects such as chairs in a location, and making them blend naturally with the rest of the background, but I think that’s just another reason to continue experimenting!
I am looking forward to the next stages of this project, and my next update! I hope to have plenty of progress completed by my next blog. Thank you for stopping by! These two weeks, I have continued progress on my VAM 30 Project! This time, I’ve switched gears and worked on interior settings instead of character sketches. This is not only because I want to practice my skills at designing and drawing locations, but also because I plan to come back to my character sketches with fresh eyes. I plan to draw several interiors, floor plans, and the exterior of the main building, which is a bookshop with floors for living situated above it. Here are some of my sketches and floor plans so far! I have really enjoyed working with these spaces, as I don’t have a lot of experience with drawing settings, and getting to experiment and try new things has been very exciting! I’ve had some difficulty with being able to have a place feel full, but not be muddled by details, but I am looking forward to working towards a result I am satisfied with. I really want the locations and scenery to have as much personality as the characters inhabiting them!
I am looking forward to updating you, and to showing you more progress in the near future! See you next blog, and thank you for stopping by! These past two weeks, I have continued work on my VAM 30 Project. I completed 49 more preliminary sketches, for a total of 109 out of 120 so far! In addition, I also started choosing theme colours for characters, depending on their outfit, purpose and personality. I did these in alcohol marker ink. I feel this has made my sketching process much more efficient. I ran into some trouble with the colours bleeding through the pages, but I’m not too fussed about it, because of the already-experimental nature of my work so far in my designated sketchbook. Perhaps it’ll even help me come up with even more ideas!
I am looking forward to the next stages of this undertaking, and to my next blog update! I hope to have even more done by then. Thank you for stopping by! First update of the year! Last week, I began my VAM (Visual Arts and Media) 30 Project! Basically what I will be doing is the ‘pre-production’ for a so-far untitled series. The premise of this series is the concept of the children of demon-like entities, and how they live their lives in an otherwise ordinary world. I chose to pursue this project because of my passion for character creation and world design! This year, I’ll be working both physically and digitally! I have planned to create six character sheets, with possibly more, if time permits. Before finalising these sheets, however, I plan to create twenty preliminary sketches, to figure out the shape, clothing, and attitude of the characters. Then I will create three coloured semi-finals, before selecting a final design to make into the sheet. There will also be a poster-like coloured spread to demonstrate the personality and/or abilities of each character! They will vary in style from character to character, and I am very excited to work on them, as I think it will be a very enjoyable experiment with colour and layout. I also plan to draw several interiors and an exterior shot. These will be the inside and outside of a bookshop, as well as a floor plan, and the rooms upstairs, including a living room, kitchens, and bedrooms. This will be the main location that characters congregate at within the narrative so far, so I really want to imbue them with just as much personality as the characters themselves. I plan to display my digital work with a projector, and to present the physical pieces mounted on a trifold! I also designated a notebook for all of the preliminary sketches, so that they will be easy to transport and view. I chose this project because I want to improve my skills at character creation and general design skills. I also want to expand my skills to include backgrounds and settings! So far, I have created sixty of the total one-hundred and twenty preliminary sketches. These are done in pencil, and outlined in black marker. I will be choosing three of the most different, and most interesting designs to move on to creating semi-finals. Then I’ll choose the final design to make into a sheet and then the spread! Here are some of my favourites so far! I also experimented with shapes and shape language! Some challenges I have encountered so far is being able to come up with twenty various designs, some with large changes, and some with minimal.
I have really enjoyed this project thus far, and am very much looking forward to continuing to work on it! See you next blog, and thank you for stopping by! Halfway there! This month in VAM Academy, we worked on our independent projects. My independent project is a series of four paintings in acrylics. I have completed the first two paintings already, and the third is almost finished as well. I started all of them off by doing a thumbnail in my sketchbook, figuring out the portraits expression and pose. I did quite a few sketches, figuring out poses and facial expressions. Then, I laid down the sketch on canvas. I then did an underpainting, in the colours I planned on using. An underpainting is an initial coat of paint, almost watercolor like in consistency. They are a good way to unite colour values, and ensure that there are no white patches on a canvas. Since my paintings are acrylic, I diluted the paint with regular water and then used a large brush to coat areas and used a paper towel to pat away excess paint in lighter places After that, I started blocking out values with solid colour. For example, in the painting of Synth, I started with her chest, coat and face, in orange and yellow. With Charlie, I blocked out his coat and face first with blue, green and red. For Marigold, I did her face and clothing and hair. Then, once everything was blocked out, I started with more intricate details, like Synth's gloves, Marigold's bouquet, and Charlie's rifle. After doing more work on cleaning up their silhouettes, I started layering their backgrounds. Their backgrounds are all slightly different shades of green because of each paintings underpainting. For example, Charlie’s has a more blue undertone. Each portrait has a different element in their background. Synth has skulls, (I wanted them to look vaporous, like they were steaming up from vials of toxic liquids), Charlie has lines of blue that look like circuitry, and Marigold has roses. Marigold is not yet complete at the time of writing this, so here is her progress. Charlie and Synth are both complete, here is them side by side (Charlie is unsigned because I was out of black paint at the time). This project has been very helpful at expanding on my strengths and weaknesses. I am very glad to have chosen this project to do! It is a very exciting and interesting project to do, and I hope to do more like it in the future.
Thank you for reading my blog! Signing off, Lee On December 16th, the Croxford Academies showcased our skills and innovations during the Celebration of Learning. As a part of the Visual Arts and Media Academy, I feel that the art show was a very good demonstration of what a professional art show would feel like. As an individual, I personally feel that the art showcase went very well for me. I got to present art that I am proud of creating, alongside other people with similar passion. As a group I feel that the art show was a success, because all of us who volunteered to help set up the show gained valuable experience in being self directed. Everyone put out their best work and the show looked amazing. If I had to change something about the work I put up, I think I would have put out more of my photography work. Overall, the VAM Celebration of Learning was a fantastic experience to have, and I hope to participate in similar projects in the future.
